Arriving in Bali Taught Me to Be a Guest

A reflection on place, heritage, service and spiritual meaning.

KOA-STORY-056 · A personal reflection adapted from historical founder posts

On our travels we came to Bali, where I experienced unfamiliar streets, climate, traffic, food and spiritual traditions. I also wrote about personal visions and gridwork experiences around places we visited.

How this shapes my idea of aloha

Travel reminded me that being drawn to a place is not the same as belonging to every part of its culture. A visitor needs curiosity, respect, awareness of local needs and a willingness to learn. I can speak about what I personally felt while being careful not to claim that my experience defines a place or its people.

Reflection

What does respect and service ask of you?

How can you approach an unfamiliar community as a respectful guest rather than an expert?

Your own traditions and experiences deserve to be met with respect.
