Chapter 6 · ʻĀina, aloha and sacred presence

The Sacred Space I Wanted Was Bigger Than a Storefront

A reflection on place, heritage, service and spiritual meaning.

KOA-STORY-055 · A personal reflection adapted from historical founder posts

After years inside retail and healing centers, I sometimes imagined creating another physical place for people to gather. While reflecting on Maui, I realized I was longing for the feeling of welcome and sacred space more than for four walls.

How this shapes my idea of aloha

That did not make physical spaces unimportant. It helped me understand that a community can grow through shared practices, relationships and responsibility across many settings. A gathering in nature, a local circle or a thoughtful online space can still ask people to show care, not just consume an experience.

Reflection

What does respect and service ask of you?

What kind of space do you want to create for others, whether or not you own a building?

Your own traditions and experiences deserve to be met with respect.
