Before Atreo arrived, we found a house on Hawaiʻi Island. I remember how empty it was and how meaningful it felt simply to have a bed and a place where we could settle. We were waiting on employment and immigration matters while getting ready to become parents.
What I carried into the next chapter
That home was not an image of luxury. It was a lesson in what safety and belonging could feel like when so much was uncertain. Years later, when I talked about building a dream life, I kept coming back to the reality that a home is more than its furnishings.
