The Founder Journey · Chapter 1 · Roots of service

Looking for Purpose at Twenty-One

A moment from the life and lessons that eventually shaped Koa.

Story KOA-STORY-004 · An editorial adaptation of earlier founder writing

At twenty-one I entered a spiritual community that became a defining chapter of my life. Over the next years I taught, worked with people and developed business and service skills. I wanted to be devoted to something larger than myself.

What this chapter taught me

There were heartfelt experiences in that season and expectations that narrowed how I could live. I can acknowledge both. An experience can teach you a great deal and still be something you eventually need to outgrow. I now think more carefully about the difference between freely chosen service and losing your own agency.
