What Watching Dolphins Reminded Me About Play

A reflection on place, heritage, service and spiritual meaning.

KOA-STORY-059 · A personal reflection adapted from historical founder posts

Our family spent meaningful time in the ocean in Hawaiʻi, including experiences around dolphins that I have described as deeply moving. Those moments were part of our life as new parents and became connected, in my own spiritual interpretation, to trust and play.

How this shapes my idea of aloha

I do not want to use those memories to make claims about dolphin sounds improving a baby's health or development. What I remember most is the invitation I felt to stop living only through duty. Play, wonder and delight deserve a place alongside work and service.

Reflection

What does respect and service ask of you?

Where have you forgotten to make room for play because you are so focused on being responsible?

Your own traditions and experiences deserve to be met with respect.
